Owner and builder Dave Matehaere puts it perfectly:

At its heart is an extended-ported 13B rotary, built by Holdsworth Automotive and boosted by a Master Power GT35 turbo, with a Link G4 RX ECU and Series 6 five-speed gearbox.

A V-mounted intercooler, twin-pass radiator, twin oil coolers, upgraded fuel system and OS Giken twin-plate clutch complete the package.

Underneath are BC Gold coilovers, upgraded suspension and a serious brake upgrade.

Then there are the wheels:

18x9 Work Meister fronts. 19x10.5 rears.

Wrapped in a BN Sports widebody kit and bumpers, they give this RX-7 a stance that’s impossible to ignore.

A TROPHY CABINET FULL OF PEDIGREE

This RX-7 has been turning heads for years.

It won Best Mazda RX-7 Series 4 & 5 at the V4 & Rotary Nationals in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

It also picked up:

Dave has since stripped it back, refreshed, upgraded and rebuilt it again.

REBUILT AGAIN. BETTER THAN EVER.

In 2026, the RX-7 underwent another major transformation.

Finished in striking Indigo Light, the rebuild went far beyond fresh paint.

The engine, suspension and subframe came out. The engine bay was refreshed, the underbody sealed and detailed, the gearbox reconditioned and the interior retrimmed.

It also received new glass, weather strips, wheel bearings, exhaust, upgraded brake hoses and fuel lines, a reconditioned steering rack and a 200-amp alternator.

Even the original heater system was reinstated.

Then there are the details you don’t immediately see - sound deadening, undertrays, guard liners, wiring, cooling and countless finishing touches.

This is the result of years spent refining every part of the car.

MORE THAN A BUILD

Before Dave owned it, the RX-7 belonged to his good friend Sam Harrison, who later passed away.

When Dave took ownership in 2011, the car became more than another project.

Over the years, he rebuilt and refined it into the finished RX-7 his mate had imagined.

It’s also Dave’s 12th rotary.

Now he’s decided it’s time for someone else to become its custodian.

“It’s a chance for someone to own the car in the finished state Sam had dreamed of and make it their own.”

By putting the RX-7 into this lottery, Sam’s legacy continues while helping support the rescue helicopter crews there for New Zealanders when they’re needed most.

Lottery Terms and Conditions - JDM Lottery 2026

This lottery is being run by Northern Rescue Helicopter Limited (Northern Rescue). By purchasing a ticket you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions below which apply to this lottery.

Tickets

  1. There are 4,000 tickets offered for purchase in this lottery, which are numbered from 1 to 4000 inclusive.
  2. Tickets are NZ $100 per ticket (inclusive of GST).
  3. There is no limit on the number of tickets that can be purchased by any one person.
  4. Tickets will be available for purchase from 26 August 2026 until midnight 25 October 2026 (unless sold out prior).
  5. Tickets will be issued by email. If no email address is provided, tickets will be posted to the address specified at the time of purchase.

Eligibility

  1. To be eligible to purchase a ticket in this lottery you must be 18 years or over.
  2. Employees of the Northern Rescue and the Northern Rescue's related organisations, and their immediate families, are ineligible to participate in the lottery.
  3. Evidence of the winner's identity and eligibility must be provided to Northern Rescue, or its legal advisors, within 14 days of the date of the prize draw so that transfer of ownership can be completed. If not provided, the prize will be forfeited, and a new winner drawn.

Prize

  1. The prize is a 1986 Mazda RX-7 Series 4 worth the total value of $80,000.
  2. You acknowledge that:

    10.1 other than your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 Northern Rescue’s responsibility to the winner is limited to providing the prize in the condition it is in at the date of the prize draw,

    10.2 as the prize is a second hand vehicle it will not be in a new condition, it will have wear and tear and the overall condition will be reflective of the age of the vehicle,

    10.3 there may be defects in the vehicle that the Trust is not aware of and there may be difficulties in sourcing replacement parts for the vehicle given its age and unique nature,

    10.4 the Trust gives no warranties and makes no representations as to condition or state of the motor vehicle which is provided on an ‘as is where is basis’.

Prize Draw

  1. The prize draw will take place on 28 October 2026 at 1pm at the Helicopter Base at 440 Harvard Lane, Ardmore Airport 2582.
  2. The prize draw will be by blind selection of the numbers associated with the tickets sold, under supervision of an independent witness in accordance with Rule 6 (14) of the Gambling Act (Lottery) Game Rules 2004.
  3. The results of the prize draw will be published in the New Zealand Herald, on Northern Rescue’s website and social media platforms.
  4. An email will be sent to all ticket holders notifying them of the winner of the prize.
  5. The prize winner will be contacted by telephone and notified in writing.
  6. The winner agrees that their details and photograph may be used for publicity and/or promotional purposes.

Collection of Prize

  1. If the winner cannot be identified or located, after a reasonable effort, and the prize or reward remains unclaimed 3 months after the declaration of the result of the lottery, the society must notify the Secretary for Internal Affairs within 1 month. Prizes must then be disposed of according to the Secretary for Internal Affairs directions. The society must ensure that the prize is retained for 3 months after the draw; or if the prize is livestock or a property of a perishable nature, sell the prize in a way that brings a reasonable price and retain the proceeds (after deducting the reasonable costs of the sale) for 3 months after the draw until directions are received from the Secretary for Internal Affairs.
  2. All costs associated with collection of the prize and the transfer of ownership are the responsibility of the winner.

Use of Funds Raised

  1. Funds raised from this lottery will be applied to support the charitable purposes of Northern Rescue through the provision and enhancement of emergency air ambulance, search and rescue, and aeromedical services throughout Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel. Funds may be applied to the operational, capital, clinical, and organisational costs associated with delivering, maintaining, developing, and improving these services, including the acquisition, operation, maintenance, and replacement of aircraft, equipment, technology, infrastructure, and other resources required to provide safe, effective, and sustainable rescue and aeromedical services. The purpose of these services is to provide timely access to specialist emergency and critical care, support search and rescue operations, improve patient outcomes, and save lives within the communities served by Northern Rescue.

Ticket Holder Authorisations

  1. You authorise Northern Rescue to retain your name and contact details in Northern Rescue’s database and to use them to keep you informed of future offers, promotional events and/or fundraising activities that Northern Rescue believes may be of interest to you (Promotional Materials).
  2. If you do not wish to receive Promotional Materials you will be entitled to opt out of them by using the unsubscribe feature.
  3. Cancellation of Lottery

  1. Northern Rescue reserves the right to cancel the lottery at any time prior to the prize draw.
  2. In the event of a cancellation of this lottery, the cancellation will be published on Northern Rescue’s website, social media, and in a local newspaper. Northern Rescue will refund all ticket costs to the ticket holders in the event of cancellation.
